The Arizona Cardinals names their 2018 team captains on Wednesday

Not that it would have created much controversy anyway but the Arizona Cardinals got it right in naming their team captains for the 2018 season.  It all starts with the face of the franchise in receiver Larry Fitzgerald.

It is a no brainer to name Fitz as one of seven team captains this season.  He is returning for his 15th NFL season and has apparently said he has not shut the door on more after this season.  One at a time though.

Another captain on offense is quarterback Sam Bradford.  While not written in any rulebook that says your starting quarterback has to be a team captain, I think in a quarterback driven league, it is important that the starting quarterback be a leader on the team.

It is nice the Cardinals have recognized Bradford this way in his first season in the desert. Aside from what you think on the field, he is certainly a leader as well off of it.

They were the only offensive teams captains.  On defense four of the team captains reside.  That starts with Chandler Jones up front.  He was the NFL’ s sack leader a season ago.  He has also proven to be a leader in the community off the field.

Nine-year veteran defensive lineman Corey Peters and 13-year veteran safety Antoine Bethea are two other captains well deserving.  Both have played very well for this team.

Cornerback Patrick Peterson, heading into his eight season already if you can believe it, is also a team captain.  Peterson looks as healthy and as strong as ever to lead the secondary.

The final captain is on special teams.  Kicker Phil Dawson, now in his 20th season in the NFL, won his job last week over rookie Matt McCrane.

Next. Arizona Cardinals feel optimism with newcomers. dark

While many believe McCrane deserved the job over Dawson, it still doesn’t take away the leadership Dawson brings.  His 20-years of experience will mean a lot to a younger club.
