The extension for running back David Johnson put an exclamation point on an offseason full of positives for the Arizona Cardinals
The Arizona Cardinals saved the best for last. There was just one thing missing from the impressive offseason they were enjoying. Worry no more Cards fans, the most-important objective of the spring and summer months has been achieved.
The announcement that the club and star running back David Johnson have reached agreement on an extension brought smiles all around. The offense’s most-vital component has been rewarded. Arizona can now go forward with their 2018 campaign with no distractions in their locker room.
Kudos to Johnson for refusing to sit at home while his agent and the Cardinals worked on the new contract. The fact that the 26-year old chose to be with his teammates instead is a testament to his character. By taking the high road, Johnson avoided the mess that another ultra-talented back, Le’Veon Bell, has created with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The signing of Johnson is the coup de gras of what has been an excellent year for the Cards’ front office. Things got on the right track back in March, when free agent guard Justin Pugh was inked to a five-year, $45 million deal. Pugh is expected lead an offensive line being counted on to protect starting signal-caller Sam Bradford, and open up running lanes for Johnson.
In late April, general manager Steve Keim shrewdly moved up in the NFL Draft to acquire a franchise quarterback. Josh Rosen, considered to be the most pro-ready of the college prospects, was acquired with the 10th-overall selection. Early indications are that the former UCLA Bruin will live up to the hype, and successfully lead Arizona into the future when Bradford moves on.
A trade with the Cleveland Browns in May brought a much-needed, number-two cornerback to the desert. Jamar Taylor has arrived to shore up a position that is in dire need of some stability. The 27-year old tallied 119 tackles, three interceptions and an outstanding 23 passes defensed over the last two seasons with Cleveland.
Another extension, handed out in June, is also extremely important to the team’s fortunes. Andy Lee, who was brought in just prior to the 2017 season-opener, is the best punter that the Cardinals have had in years. The three-time Pro Bowler will remain with the organization through the 2020 campaign, and new special teams coordinator Jeff Rodgers should be thrilled by that fact.
Cards’ executives deserve praise for the outstanding work they’ve done over the past few months. They’ll look even better if the fruits of their labor pay off on the playing field. They can certainly rest easy knowing that Johnson is now a happy camper.
