Arizona Cardinals send inept offensive coordinator packing
By Jim Koch
Offensive coordinator Mike McCoy was finally given his walking papers after a disastrous stint with the Arizona Cardinals
It was pretty much a foregone conclusion that the Arizona Cardinals would be forced to address an ugly situation. A 45-10 loss to the Denver Broncos on national television this past Thursday night would surely necessitate changes. Most fans of the Cards will not be disappointed with the first course of action that the front office took.
Offensive coordinator Mike McCoy was sent on his way, just hours after Arizona’s humiliating defeat. The 46-year old’s stint as the club’s play-caller was an atrocious one. Denver had relieved McCoy of his coordinator duties in November of 2017, making this the second consecutive year that he’s failed to finish out the season.
McCoy just couldn’t get the offense going in the desert. His outdated ideas failed to confuse any of the defenses that the Cardinals went up against. McCoy’s misuse of star running back David Johnson was especially egregious.
Allowing McCoy to continue working with Josh Rosen could’ve quite possibly caused the young signal-caller irreparable harm. The rookie’s performance versus the Broncos was downright disturbing. Rosen tossed three interceptions (two returned for touchdowns), fumbled twice and was sacked six times.
Cards’ quarterbacks coach Byron Leftwich will take over for McCoy. The former NFL passer is a leftover from the Bruce Arians regime. McCoy was just one of the incompetent assistants that was hired off of the street by head coach Steve Wilks.
The firing of McCoy will hopefully be just the beginning of what should be a complete overhaul of the current coaching staff. With Wilks and his coaches running the show, the Cardinals are arguably the worst team in the league. Every general manager makes mistakes, and the one that Steve Keim made by choosing Wilks and his group needs to be quickly corrected.
