The Arizona Cardinals are in more trouble than most realize if the talk about Patrick Peterson wanting out is true

Things appear to be getting worse for the Arizona Cardinals. It’s bad enough that the squad is limping along with a one and six record. That in itself could make even the most diehard fans want to spend their Sunday afternoons in a different way.

Now, according to countless media outlets, there’s talk that the best player on the Cardinals wants out. Patrick Peterson, the club’s seven-time Pro Bowler, is allegedly desperate to play somewhere else. With the current state of the team, could you blame him?

Word out of their headquarters is that Arizona’s brass has no interest in dealing the cornerback. Management is orchestrating a rebuild, and would like Peterson to be a part of it. There are those who are indicating that the shutdown cover guy has other ideas, however.

Cards’ general manager Steve Keim has created a big old mess with the hiring of head coach Steve Wilks and his staff. Peterson seemed to be a big proponent of Wilks’ when he was given the job. Apparently, that’s no longer the case.

Peterson is begrudgingly a part of a Cardinals defense that’s currently ranked 24th in the NFL. But even more maddening for the former first-round draft pick is the fact that the Big Red offense ranks dead-last in the league. Because of that unit’s ineffectiveness, Peterson and his fellow defenders are forced to be on the field for inordinate amounts of time.

Although some of the 28-year old’s unhappiness with Arizona can be justified, there are those who may look at the trade request as an act of disloyalty. Peterson’s willingness to abandon teammates when times get tough shows an extreme lack of character. His on-field dominance is most likely the only reason that the Cards’ front office would tolerate such behavior from an employee.

The Cardinals want Peterson to be a part of an eventual turnaround, and rightfully so. Trading away such an outstanding performer would be bad business. Things are bad enough with the franchise at the moment, let’s not make things worse.
