Sportswriter Peter King is reporting that Mike McCarthy may have interest in becoming the next head coach of the Arizona Cardinals

Mike McCarthy is extremely familiar with the Arizona Cardinals. The former head coach of the Green Bay Packers lost twice to the team from the desert in postseason play. Back on December 2nd, McCarthy’s squad once again fell to the Cards, a defeat which turned out to be his final game as the leader of the Packers.

Ironically, McCarthy could end up becoming the head coach of the club that’s been such a thorn in his side throughout the years. Sportswriter Peter King is reporting that there may be mutual interest between the Cardinals and the man that they’ve had so much success against. A union of the two parties is contingent upon Steve Wilks being canned of course, but that’s a scenario that is expected to ultimately play out.

McCarthy had an excellent run (2006-18) as Green Bay’s top dog. The 55-year old led the Pack to four NFC Championship appearances, and one Super Bowl victory. McCarthy’s group triumphed over the Pittsburgh Steelers at the conclusion of the 2010 campaign, earning him his one and only Lombardi Trophy.

McCarthy compiled a 125-77-2 regular-season record as the Packers’ head man. Green Bay appeared in 18 playoff contests during his tenure, winning 10 of them.

McCarthy entered the NFL in 1993, when he was named the offensive quality control coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs. He became an offensive coordinator seven years later, a post he held for five seasons with the New Orleans Saints. McCarthy also spent one year as the offensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers in 2005.

The hiring of McCarthy would be a huge upgrade for Arizona. Wilks and his staff have been an unmitigated disaster. A loss this Sunday to the Seattle Seahawks would leave the Cards with a 3-13 mark, matching the worst record in franchise history.

The Cardinals need improvement at tight end. dark. Next

If Wilks is indeed sent packing, McCarthy will most likely be just one of several names that will be connected with the job. After such a disastrous 2018, the Cardinals’ brass are going to need to make sure that their next head-coaching choice is a good one. McCarthy would certainly be an intriguing candidate.
