Arizona Cardinals host another top quarterback prospect
By Avery Duncan
The Arizona Cardinals aren’t done doing their research on top quarterback prospects.
Per John Gambo of Arizona Sports 98.7 FM, the Arizona Cardinals have added Duke’s Daniel Jones to the short list of quarterbacks they’ve visited, with the other being Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray.
Jones finished his Junior season at Duke with 2,670 passing yards, 22 touchdowns, and nine interceptions, and he had a completion rate of 60.1%. Per Pro Football Focus, Jones had an adjusted completion rate of 74.3%, good for 11th in the class, and a drop rate of 9.2%, second in the class. His 2018 PFF grade finished at an above average 81.9.
Jones is projected to be a first round or early second round selection, but he may have solidified a top-32 spot with his stellar Pro Day outing that included a 4.67 second 40-yard-dash.
DraftNetwork.com currently ranks Jones as their fourth best 2019 NFL Draft quarterback, behind Kyler Murray, Dwayne Haskins, and Drew Lock.
Jones isn’t known as a quarterback with a particularly strong arm or laser accuracy, but he has an ideal frame at 6-5, 221-pounds, tested well at the combine and has sound mechanics. His head coach at Duke, David Cutcliffe, formerly coached both Peyton and Eli Manning in college.
However, don’t expect Jones to be wearing Cardinal Red anytime soon. This move could be viewed as the team doing their due diligence on a top prospect or as a way to potentially increase Josh Rosen‘s trade value. If the Cardinals decide to take a quarterback in the 2019 NFL Draft, it would likely be Kyler Murray; a player linked to the team for most of the draft process.
