The Arizona Cardinals seem to be going for quantity over quality at offensive line.

One of the most obvious holes entering the offseason for the Arizona Cardinals was the offensive line. In 2018 the offensive line allowed 50+ sacks for the second season in a row. Though Steve Keim didn’t go out and add a big-ticket lineman, such as Trent Brown or Rodger Saffold, he’s added a bevy of talent that will surely make for an interesting training camp battle.

After the free agency period, draft, and undrafted free agent market, the Cardinals sit at 22 rostered offensive linemen. The list includes;

Though the group of linemen includes familiar faces such as D.J. Humphries, A.Q. Shipley, and Justin Pugh, a large part of the grouping are new. The most impactful veteran additions include Marcus Gilbert and J.R. Sweezy; both will likely start week-one. Out of the 22 names, just two are recent draftees; Lamont Gaillard and Joshua Miles.

Though the abundance of players may not be of the best quality, there looks to be more depth and promising youth than before. A team typically takes nine offensive linemen into the season on their 53-man roster, my best guest for those nine linemen would be a depth chart that resembles this;

  • LT: D.J. Humphries, Korey Cunningham
  • LG: J.R. Sweezy
  • C: Mason Cole, Lamont Gaillard
  • RG: Justin Pugh, Max Garcia (swing)
  • RT: Marcus Gilbert, Joshua Miles

Though the final group of players may look very different than mine, that starting lineup, upset for possibly center (A.Q. Shipley could stay and start), appears to be locked in stone. Impactful upgrades to watch include Gilbert at RT and Sweezy at LG.  Gaillard may also be a dark horse to take the center position if Cole ultimately kicks to guard.

Considering the importance of the group and amount of players, the offensive line should be a key unit to watch as we get closer to week one.
