The Backups

There will be a total of eight cornerbacks in camp.  Now that we have an idea of who the starters might be, who will fill out the bench at the position?

Well if Murphy doesn’t win a starting spot, he will be first off the bench.  Brandon Williams goes into his fourth season in the NFL.  Fans are still waiting on him.

Williams will probably get some reps at corner but he’s going to likely end up mostly just on special teams, again.  Who knows though?  Maybe a new defensive scheme will help him?

The other three corners in camp are rookie Nate Brooks, first year corner Chris Jones, and Deatrick Nichols.  Between Brooks, Jones, Nichols, and Williams, one of those guys likely makes the 53-man roster until Peterson returns.

One of those guys could be the odd man out once Peterson does return.  As long as all of the corners are healthy, there really is no reason to carry more than four corners.

Decisions loom in free agency for Cardinals in 2020. dark. Next

The only way that changes is if Williams is such a commodity on special teams and another corner has played so well it would be difficult to release him, then maybe they keep five on the roster after Peterson returns?
