Backups

Rudy Ford could be a starter but is likely poised to be the first guy off the bench.  But you never know, a strong preseason could change all that.

Ford is in his third season out of Auburn.  It could be fun seeing him compete against rookie Deionte Thompson, who comes to the Cardinals from Alabama.

There has been high praise for Thompson.  He is a guy who is strong enough at safety he could too be a starter before all is said and done in 2019.  With Baker and Swearinger in the fold, along with Ford, that could be tough.

Josh Shaw is a veteran entering his fifth season out of USC.  He was signed as a free agent.  He was with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season after spending his first three NFL seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals.

The other safeties on the roster are second year player Jonathan Owens out of Missouri Western State and undrafted rookie Tyler Sigler out of Wheaton.  They should be considered long shots to make the 53-man roster.

With the top three safeties likely being Baker, Swearinger, and Thompson, teams may have a tougher time throwing on the Cardinals in 2019.  At the very least the thought of these three playing together is very intriguing.
