Wide receiver Trent Sherfield‘s position on the Arizona Cardinals depth chart does not accurately reflect his vast potential

The Arizona Cardinals are going to have some tough decisions to make before the regular-season gets underway. The wide receiver position, in particular, is loaded with talent this year. Deciding which pass-catchers to keep, and which ones to let go, could potentially cause Cards general manager Steve Keim to lose some sleep over the next few weeks.

Trent Sherfield’s outstanding showing during Arizona’s preseason opener surely got the club’s attention. The second-year player appeared to be on a mission. Sherfield’s passion and skill-set were on full display during the contest for both the Cardinals and perhaps the rest of the NFL as well.

The 23-year old hauled in four passes for 44 yards and a score during his team’s 17-13 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers last Thursday. Sherfield’s second-quarter touchdown was a thing of beauty. The 2018 undrafted free agent did a tightrope act in the end zone to secure what was a picture-perfect throw from quarterback Brett Hundley.

Sherfield got thrust into action as a rookie last season. In 13 appearances (two starts), the Vanderbilt University product totaled 19 receptions for 210 yards and a touchdown. Sherfield’s chances of making the Cards 2019 roster were looking good, but then the front office added a bevy of wideouts to the squad this offseason.

Arizona’s first order of business was to bring back the great Larry Fitzgerald for a 16th campaign. In March, free agents Kevin White and Damiere Byrd were signed to contracts. A month after those acquisitions, Andy Isabella, Hakeem Butler and KeeSean Johnson were added during the draft.

Sherfield’s ability to contribute on special teams could certainly increase his odds of being with the Cardinals this fall. The hit that he levied on Chargers punt returner Artavis Scott during the first preseason matchup was highlight-reel worthy. It was the type of play that could easily earn him points with special teams coordinator Jeff Rodgers.

As good as Sherfield looked, it’s no secret that the youngster faces an uphill battle to stick around in the desert. His effort against Los Angeles is an indication that he’s fully aware of the challenge that lies ahead. A couple of more outings like that from the wide receiver, however, will be hard for the Cards decision-makers to ignore.
