The Arizona Cardinals aren’t settling on the poor secondary play by making a couple of roster moves this week

What happens when you’re team is last in the NFL in interceptions? Well, you do something to change it and for the Arizona Cardinals, they aren’t just dead last, they don’t have any interceptions over the first 5 weeks of the 2019 season.

The Cardinals added free agent Trevor Williams on Wednesday in an effort to help bolster their cornerback group.  The Cardinals are going into their last week without Patrick Peterson, who will serve his 6th and final game suspension this Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons.

Williams has played 3 years in the NFL, all with the Los Angeles Chargers.  He has 3 career interceptions, with 1 coming last season.

So when you add one, that means another is going to have to go.  As of Thursday morning, that man seems to be Chris Jones who will be the odd man out according to reports.

Jones had a nice preseason but as we know, that does not always carry over to the regular season.  In this case, the Cardinals had to take what they saw and run with it given the situation with Peterson.

Jones though has only 7 tackles without an interception so far in 2019.  Jones played in all 5 games for the Cardinals, starting 1 game.

Williams may not be a much better option in the end than Jones was but Williams does have some numbers to support giving him a shot.  They have to do something.

We all knew the Cardinals would struggle without the presence of Peterson in the secondary but going this far into the season without getting an interception is not good at all. The coverage has been too soft.

So, it’s time to try something different.  Let’s not go blaming Cardinals general manager Steve Keim if it doesn’t work out.  You can’t fault them for trying to better this team, at least they are doing something.
