An unfortunate end to the season for the Arizona Cardinals third-round pick in 2019

It’s been another season of the injury bug for the Arizona Cardinals.  That has included third round draft pick Zach Allen out of Boston College.

The defensive end came in with a lot of promise.  He looked very good in preseason.  He had 8 tackles over the first 4 games of the season.

Then he missed the next 6 games with a neck injury.  He has been inactive for each of those games.  The team finally made the choice on Wednesday to end his season by placing him on injured reserve.

One has to wonder why this choice wasn’t made earlier?  It was a roster spot that could have been filled and also if the decision made earlier, there could have been a chance to play towards the end of the season.

Apparently on Wednesday it became clear this was the choice to make for Allen.  Hopefully he will come back stronger in 2020.

Some might call him a bust already but let’s not go there.  He wasn’t chosen in the third round for nothing.  He was named the starting defensive end coming out of preseason.

That was based more out of necessity but still he earned it.  Allen will need some more help along the line going into next season.

This is just the beginning for Allen though.  He should compete for the starting end job again in 2020.  Rodney Gunter and Corey Peters should also still be part of that line but they need to add depth.

If they could find someone of Allen’s talent to supplement then that would be a great start to rebuilding a defense that has had difficulty this year.  For now, the Cardinals just need to finish out these last 6 weeks the best way they can.

The Cardinals elevated Miles Brown to the active roster on Wednesday to replace Allen’s spot.  Brown is just a placeholder though.  Let’s see what he has to offer.
