The Arizona Cardinals solidified the tight end position for the next couple of years

It’s not a position that has been a strong one for the Arizona Cardinals for the most part over the last few decades.  There have been some alright tight ends, but alright at best.

When the Cardinals signed free agent Maxx Williams in the offseason, there was a little question if the trend would continue.  That answer was a definitive no.

Williams played his way into a new two-year contract extension from the team.  It is well-deserved for his performance so far in 2019.

Williams has caught 11 passes for 139-yards and has a touchdown.  For Williams though, it is more than just about stats.

Williams ability to provide blocks has been essential in Kliff Kingsbury‘s offense.  It’s an offense not very tight end friendly.  In that sense alone it is exciting to see Williams being rewarded.

There have been times Williams has also been a voice of reason and hope.  Williams has taken leadership and accepted blame for issues, has been honest about the Cardinals play.

He is fan friendly as well.  It is safe to say the full body of Williams work on and off the field is the reason he was rewarded with the extension.

Sure, we’d love to see him more involved but given the way the offense is constructed, we knew his stats wouldn’t be huge.  His 12.6-yards per reception though are huge.  Williams has made a few huge catches.

Some people were upset with his missed reception last Sunday in Tampa but those things happen.  That has been more the exception rather than the rule with him.

Next. 49ers injuries could give Cardinals an advantage. dark

Hopefully he gets a chance to provide some more big plays before the season ends.  Having stability at that position as quarterback Kyler Murray heads into his second and third years.
