Arizona Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson’s forgettable 2019 campaign will put an end to his consecutive Pro Bowl streak

Through the ups and downs of the past eight years, there’s been one constant for the Arizona Cardinals. Following each and every campaign during that time period, cornerback Patrick Peterson has represented the club in the Pro Bowl. It’s an outstanding streak, and one that both the player and the organization can be proud of.

Unfortunately, Peterson’s impressive run is about to come to an end. The 2019 season has been one that Arizona’s top cover guy would likely prefer to forget. Cards fans have gotten accustomed to perfection from Peterson, but the former first-round pick has been far from flawless during his five appearances this fall.

Things got off on the wrong foot for Peterson back in May. Many who follow the Cardinals were shocked when the NFL announced that they were suspending the 29-year old for six games. Peterson had tested positive for PEDs, and was reprimanded for using a masking agent as well.

Peterson returned in week seven, but the 6’1, 203 pounder has hardly resembled the shutdown corner he’s been since he entered the league in 2011. The fifth-overall pick of that spring’s draft has been consistently burned by the wide receivers he’s been attempting to shadow. Quarterbacks who once avoided throwing passes to Peterson’s side of the field have apparently gotten over their fear.

The disappointing showing by Peterson could leave Arizona’s front office with an incredibly difficult decision to make in the near future. The former LSU Tiger has one campaign remaining on the five-year, $70 million contract extension he signed back in 2014. Peterson will almost certainly command another big payday when his current deal runs out, but will the Cards be willing to give it to him?

Next. Cardinals return home to face Rams. dark

All good things must come to an end. Peterson’s annual trips to the Pro Bowl had to conclude at some point. Perhaps the Cardinals veteran will get back on track, and make a return to pro football’s all-star contest next season.
