Adding the talented safety would make what’s been a productive free agent signing period for the Arizona Cardinals even better

In just a matter of days, the Arizona Cardinals front office has improved the club’s defensive unit significantly. Free agent additions like Jordan Phillips, Devon Kennard and De’Vondre Campbell have been brought aboard to make coordinator Vance Joseph‘s job easier. Cards general manager Steve Keim certainly deserves kudos for what he’s accomplished over the past week, but why stop there?

There’s another defender still seeking employment who would look fantastic in an Arizona uniform. Damarious Randall, a safety who has 56 starts on his professional resume, would make an excellent partner for Budda Baker. As it stands now, the slot next to the Pro Bowler is up for grabs, and the Cardinals would be smart to consider Randall for the starting gig.

Randall, who has spent the past two seasons with the Cleveland Browns, was a first-round draft choice of the Green Bay Packers back in 2015. The 5’11,196 pounder switched to the cornerback position when he entered the league, despite the fact that he had played safety in college. Randall appeared in 39 games (30 starts) for the Packers from 2015-17, and racked up 144 tackles,10 interceptions and 32 passes defensed during his time with the organization.

In 2018, Randall was traded to the Browns in a deal that included quarterback DeShone Kizer being shipped to Green Bay. The former Arizona State Sun Devil was moved back to the safety spot by his new team, and started all 26 contests he appeared in for Cleveland. Randall totaled 146 tackles, four picks and 15 pass breakups during his two years performing in front of the “Dawg Pound”.

Next. Bullard is back with the Cardinals. dark

As it stands now, Jalen and Deionte Thompson will be competing for the vacant safety post next to Baker. While both youngsters certainly showed promise as rookies in 2019, Cards management could do better. Bringing a talent like Randall to the desert would provide an upgrade to a defensive backfield that could use all of the help it can get.
