The well-traveled veteran becomes the second cover guy to be acquired this week by the front office of the Arizona Cardinals
The Arizona Cardinals have struck again. For the second consecutive summer, the club’s front office has had to deal with the loss of the injury-prone Robert Alford. General manager Steve Keim has reacted swiftly to the unfortunate situation, adding two experienced players to the cornerback mix.
On Wednesday it was announced that Ken Crawley would be joining the Cardinals. Two days later, the well-traveled B.W. Webb was handed a one-year contract by the Arizona brass. The torn pectoral muscle suffered by Alford was a devastating blow to the squad’s defense, so finding someone who can pick up the slack has obviously become a priority.
The 30-year old Webb was a fourth-round draft pick of the Dallas Cowboys back in 2013. In 15 appearances as a rookie, the cover guy totaled 16 tackles and one pass breakup for “America’s Team”. Webb’s stint with the Cowboys would be short-lived, however.
After missing the entire 2014 preseason with a hip flexor, Webb was released by Dallas in August of his sophomore campaign. One day later, the corner was claimed off of the waiver wire by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Webb would spend just one year in the “Steel City”, registering a mere two tackles in the 11 contests he dressed for.
In September of 2015, Webb was added to the Tennessee Titans practice squad. He was promoted to the active roster on November 8th, and recorded his first NFL interception against the New Orleans Saints. Webb would appear in nine games (two starts) for the Titans, and was credited with 22 tackles, two passes defensed and the pick.
A year later, Webb agreed to a contract with the Saints. In 14 matchups (eight starts), the Virginia native tallied 28 tackles, an interception and 11 pass breakups. In 2017, Webb was employed by both the Chicago Bears and Cleveland Browns, but didn’t see action for either franchise.
The New York Giants inked Webb to a one-year deal in March of 2018, and were rewarded with the most productive season of his pro career. In 16 contests (13 starts) for the “G-Men”, the former William and Mary product racked up 59 tackles, a pick and six passes defensed.
Last year, Webb dressed in 15 games (12 starts) for the Cincinnati Bengals. His 2019 numbers included 37 tackles, an interception and seven pass breakups. It will be interesting to see what kind of contributions, if any, Webb can make to the Cardinals this fall.
