Cornerback

Let’s face it. The Cardinals partied like it was 2015 with Patrick Peterson and Dre Kirkpatrick taking the majority of the snaps. Cornerback Robert Alford missed his second straight season and it’s rational to wonder if he has anything to give at this point. Byron Murphy has made strides, but he’s best suited to play in the slot.

Peterson has made his fair share of plays, but he’s no longer the lockdown corner nor playmaker he once was. He’s lost a step and it’s fair to say he’ll lose a few more if the Cardinals fool themselves into thinking he still a capable top corner in the NFL.

The others, who include Kirkpatrick, Johnathan Joseph, Kevin Peterson, and for a single game, De’Vante Bausby, aren’t legit number one or number two corners. It’s safe to say the Cardinals may have to take more than a single offseason to fix this patchwork group.

If Alford comes back healthy and is making plays, and if Murphy takes another step, the Cardinals may have a solid corner tandem. But the keyword is ‘may.’ Let’s not take chances. Let’s either sign a decent corner or draft one, if not a couple.
