Late-round tight end possibilities for the Arizona Cardinals
By Jim Koch
One of the top needs of the Arizona Cardinals heading into the current offseason was the tight end spot. The front office did re-sign Darrell Daniels back in March, but the veteran is nothing more than a backup. Most of the top free agent tight ends have already found homes, which leaves the upcoming NFL Draft as the Cards next best option for addressing the issue.
The Cardinals have six selections to use over the course of the three-day event, and there’s a good possibility that general manager Steve Keim will spend at least one pick on a tight end. The University of Florida’s Kyle Pitts is, without question, the top-rated prospect at the position. However, the 6’6, 240 pound dynamo will almost certainly be off of the board before Arizona’s turn comes up in the opening round (16th-overall).
If Keim and his cohorts can exercise some patience, there are a group of capable tight ends who may still be available during the later rounds. The following are a few of those possible options.
Kenny Yeboah is a talented pass-catcher from the University of Mississippi. The 6’4, 240 pounder spent just one campaign with Ole Miss, after four years playing for the Temple Owls in Philadelphia. In 34 total college appearances, Yeboah totaled 74 receptions,1,062 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns.
Bowling Green State’s Quintin Morris is another youngster who could warrant consideration from the Cards. In 37 games for the Falcons, the 6’4, 248 pounder hauled in 125 passes for 1,529 yards and 13 scores. Morris was named First-team All-MAC in 2020 and Second-team All-MAC in 2019.
Texas Christian University’s Pro Wells could also end up on the Cardinals radar. The 6’4, 250 pounder was credited with 32 receptions for 403 yards and eight touchdowns in 16 contests for the Horned Frogs. Wells was named Second-team All-Big 12 back in 2019.
Southern Methodist University’s Kylen Granson could also find his way to the desert in a couple of weeks. The 6’3, 235 pounder suited up for two seasons with Rice University before taking his talents to SMU in 2019. In 37 collegiate appearances, Granson registered 129 receptions, 1,879 receiving yards and 16 scores.
One last tight end worth mentioning is North Carolina State University’s Cary Angeline. In 26 games with the Wolfpack, the 6’7, 250 pounder caught 61 passes for 960 yards and 12 touchdowns. Angeline received an honorable mention as an All-ACC performer back in 2019.
