Could the Cardinals send Chandler Jones packing to Buffalo?
By Adam Patrick
Arizona Cardinals pass rusher Chandler Jones wants to be traded and the Buffalo Bills could be a team that might be interested in acquiring him this year.
On Tuesday, the majority of the Arizona Cardinals players arrived at the team’s facilities for this year’s training camp. Among those who made an appearance was Cardinals veteran pass rusher Chandler Jones.
Jones‘ name has been in the headlines recently thanks to a report about him requesting a trade earlier this offseason.
He’s still with Arizona and it seems like he will be participating in camp this summer. But will the Cardinals make it to the regular season with Jones still a part of their roster?
Could the Arizona Cardinals trade Chandler Jones to the Buffalo Bills?
Since the report about his desire to get out of the desert was released, several teams have been suggested as possible landing spots for the talented Arizona pass rusher.
NBC Sports’ Peter King is someone who recently joined in on the fun of coming up with a potential trade destination with Jones. For his choice, King picked a team in the Buffalo Bills that some believe can make it all the way to the Super Bowl this season.
Here’s what King had to say about why the Bills should be interested in the Cardinals pass rusher.
"“Buffalo has a crying need for a pass-rusher, which is why the Bills reached for the green Gregory Rousseau from Miami in the first round last April. If Jones is healthy after missing the last three months last year with a torn biceps, I’d offer Arizona GM Steve Keim my 2022 first-round pick (likely to be between 27 and 32) to get one of the game’s most disruptive players, at 31.”"
King didn’t cite any sources or anything in his explanation, so this is him just firing off ideas like any other football fan.
Still, Buffalo seems like as good of a destination for Jones as almost any. The Bills are in the window to contend for a championship right now and adding a pass rusher of Jones’ caliber could be what gets them over the hump.
Currently, Buffalo only has around $10.5 million in cap space, so they would have to do a little shuffling in order to fit the $15.5 million cap hit they would acquire in a trade for Jones.
The veteran pass rusher does also have the desire for a new contract, so extending him after acquiring him in a trade could be a way for the Bills to fit his 2021 salary on their roster.
For now, Jones is still expected to open up the upcoming season in an Arizona uniform. But a lot can change during the next few weeks, so we still can’t rule out the possibility of the Cardinals being presented with a trade for their veteran pass rusher that might actually intrigue them.
