San Francisco 49ers- Trey Lance/Jimmy Garoppolo

When the San Francisco 49ers selected Trey Lance with the third-overall choice of last year’s draft, the general belief was that the rookie would beat out Jimmy Garoppolo for the starting job. The former North Dakota State University star did see action in six contests (including two starts), but Garoppolo was handed the bulk of the playing time.

It looks as if the 49ers are now ready to turn over the reigns to Lance, but the jury is still out on the 22-year old’s ability to succeed. Lance certainly has the physical traits to excel at the highest level.

The 6 foot 4, 224 pounder has a cannon for an arm, and is also equipped to hurt opposing defenses with his legs. During a matchup with the Cardinals last October, Lance threw for 192 yards, and gained another 89 yards on the ground during San Francisco’s 17-10 loss.

The 49ers scoring attack will now be led by Lance after almost a full year of learning from the sidelines. Even so, there’s no guarantee that franchise is making the right decision. That level of uncertainty could result in a sink or swim scenario for San Francisco this coming fall.
