3 reasons why Arizona Cardinals head coaching job is attractive
By Sion Fawkes
Word around the league says the Arizona Cardinals head coaching job isn’t an attractive one. Here are three reasons why they are wrong.
The Arizona Cardinals head coaching job is more attractive than most critics (and Carson Palmer) believe. For one, the Redbirds are more talented than their 4-10 record.
For one, this team has three highly productive pass catchers in DeAndre Hopkins, Marquise Brown, and Zach Ertz, with the potential for more come 2023. They also play in a division where there is no one dominant team. Even the San Francisco 49ers, who have played at a high level this season, could find themselves marred in quarterback controversy, and that can sink any NFL team.
Want more fun? Here are three more reasons why the Arizona Cardinals head coaching job is more attractive than many think.
1 – Kyler Murray
I’ve said it a hundred times this year and I’ll say it again: Kyler Murray was abysmal in 2022. But following his ACL tear and upcoming surgery and rehab, he has an opportunity to turn things around in 2023, and the right coach will bring out a different Kyler Murray.
Further, Murray is a former first overall pick and he is a dual threat quarterback. He has natural talent galore, and that alone will attract coaches. Pair him with someone who has had success in this league, and he will buckle down and become the quarterback the Arizona Cardinals thought they were getting in 2019.
2 – A young defense
Whether it’s Steve Keim or someone sitting in his seat, the top priority must be to re-sign Zach Allen and Byron Murphy Jr. When they do that, and get rid of a few underperforming players, this young defense can get even younger via free agency and the NFL Draft.
They also have a few players who haven’t lit up the league, but also weren’t pushovers in 2022. The sheer youth and talent on this defense, one that enjoyed a remarkable stretch early in the season, will also attract a head coach.
3 – Time
Steve Keim and Kliff Kingsbury have been at the helm for a combined 14 seasons with just one playoff win to show for it. While many, like Carson Palmer, claim the Arizona Cardinals fire coaches left and right, Kingsbury has survived for four seasons. And the guy isn’t exactly what you’d call a coveted name.
Keim has been terrible as a general manager since the 2015 playoffs, and he somehow made it to 2022. Therefore, owner Michael Bidwill has shown his willing to exert some patience here, and that will also win a marquee coach over.
