Wideout may seek extension from the Arizona Cardinals this offseason
By Jim Koch
Marquise Brown will likely be seeking an extension from the Arizona Cardinals as he enters the final year of his rookie deal.
Shortly after acquiring Marquise “Hollywood” Brown in a trade back in April of 2022, the Arizona Cardinals exercised the fifth-year option on the wideout’s rookie contract. The front office had given up a first-round draft pick for the speedy pass-catcher and did not want to lose his services after just one season.
Monti Ossenfort, Arizona’s newly-appointed general manager, will more than likely be approached in the very near future by Brown’s management team. Tory Dandy of CAA Sports recently worked out extensions for some of the NFL’s best wide receivers. The agent’s clientele includes flat-out studs like A.J. Brown, Deebo Samuel, Chris Godwin and D.K. Metcalf.
Brown is scheduled to collect a fairly team-friendly $13.4 million in the final campaign of his first professional contract. Obviously, the talented 25-year-old will be seeking a hefty raise. What can the Cardinals expect to pay when the two sides ultimately make their way to the bargaining table?
Dandy negotiated lucrative paydays for some of his other clients over the past year or so. A.J. Brown is being paid $100 million over the next four seasons, while Samuel will collect $71.55 million over the next three campaigns. Metcalf inked a three-year, $72 million deal, while Godwin was signed to a three-year, $60 million contract.
Arizona Cardinals will need to determine Marquise Brown’s worth in 2023
It’s not yet known what the Cards will have to pony up to make Brown happy. In his one season with the team, the 5 foot 9, 170 pounder hauled in 67 passes for 709 yards and three touchdowns. Brown appeared in just 12 matchups for the Redbirds, however, thanks to the foot injury he suffered against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 6.
Brown wasn’t exactly a choir boy in his first year with the Cardinals organization. Back in August, the former Baltimore Ravens draft selection was arrested for speeding on Loop 101 in north Phoenix. According to the report, Brown was detained after traveling at 126 mph in a 65 mph zone.
Then, in late December, Brown’s playing time was cut by former Arizona head coach Kliff Kingsbury. The Florida native was on the field for a season-low 66% of the offensive snaps during a Christmas-night loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Whether those two incidents have affected how the Cards feel about Brown is anyone’s guess. The franchise may be a bit more forgiving in this case, due to the fact that they’ve invested a top draft choice in the former University of Oklahoma product. It’s fairly certain that a brand-new deal between Brown and the Cardinals will be agreed upon sometime in 2023.
