The Arizona Cardinals are strong contenders to win the Sean Payton sweepstakes. But they aren’t finished interviewing coaches just yet.

The Arizona Cardinals interviewed Sean Payton all day this past week. And the vibes surrounding team headquarters indicate he will be the guy if the Redbirds can work out a deal with the New Orleans Saints to bring Payton to the desert.

The Cardinals have a better team on paper than many think, and it was one major selling point I outlined last week regarding Payton’s potential arrival in Glendale. But Arizona is also rightfully asking themselves What if…?

What if Payton doesn’t come and spurns the Cardinals for someone else? Then what? Fortunately, the Cardinals aren’t quite finished interviewing candidates if reports of their interest in Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon hold water.

Arizona Cardinals seem to be interested in Jonathan Gannon and others

We spoke about Gannon before, and we weren’t too hot on him. However, Gannon isn’t the only candidate the Cardinals seemingly have interest in. Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan is another name that has come up, per Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated.

Then there is Brian Flores, the wild card in the entire situation. There are reasons that Flores won’t take the position if offered, but Flores is no stranger to the Redbirds. Many fans in the Red Sea might forget this little fact that Breer pointed out:

"“The baseline here is that Flores interviewed in Arizona in 2018, was runner-up for the job behind Steve Wilks and did well enough to where owner Michael Bidwill raved to other owners about him, which resulted in four interviews and Flores landing the Dolphins job in ’19. – via SI.com."

That said, we know Flores is a familiar name with Michael Bidwill. He’s also more than familiar with general manager Monti Ossenfort, as the duo worked together during their time with the New England Patriots.

Overall, if Sean Payton doesn’t come to town, the Cardinals still have more than a few options to work with. Shane Steichen is another name that shouldn’t surprise you if they add him to the still-growing wishlist. In short, the Arizona Cardinals head coaching search seems to be far from over.
