The Arizona Cardinals cannot go into the 2023 season not knowing if incumbent Kyler Murray will be ready to roll, meaning they need a stopgap.

With news breaking that Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray may not be ready for the start of the 2023 NFL season, the front office needs to look at all options at the position. This doesn’t mean they need to replace Murray, but it would be wise to go into 2023 with someone capable of guiding the team.

There are a few quarterbacks capable of doing the job slated to test the free agency market unless their respective team retains them. The Cardinals also need to only consider quarterbacks who have a track record of sustaining extended success in a single NFL season.

Arizona Cardinals need to sign a decent quarterback for 2023

Take someone like Mike White, who played well in spurts but hasn’t yet experienced consistency. He would be a bad fit for Arizona in this situation. Someone like Jacoby Brissett, however, could be what the Cardinals need.

No, Brissett is by no means someone you want to start for an entire season, but he played well when filling in for Deshaun Watson last season, with a 64% completion percentage, 7.1 yards per attempt, 12 touchdowns, 6 picks, 160 rushing yards, and a pair of rushing touchdowns.

Taylor Heinicke could also be a decent option. With a career record of 12-12-1, Heinicke also isn’t all-world. But he’s started 24 out of a possible 34 games over the past two years, with 32 touchdown passes, 21 picks, a 63.5% completion percentage, and 7.2 yards per pass.

A third option? Cooper Rush, who has a career record of 5-1. Rush hasn’t enjoyed the same kind of sustained success, but he could be the best fit here, as he found ways to win football games when filling in for an injured Dak Prescott earlier in 2022. With the Cardinals defense boasting some talent, Rush could manage the game well until Murray returns sometime in 2023.

More. Haason Reddick making former Arizona Cardinals regime look foolish. light

All of the above options probably wouldn’t play so well that they’d take Murray’s job. But they make for better players than Colt McCoy, David Blough, and Trace McSorley. Expect the Cards to look long and hard at potential quarterback options in free agency.
