The Philadelphia Eagles are expected to be without quarterback Jalen Hurts for the remainder of the season, as he unfortunately had multiple blood clots discovered in his lungs. Fortunately for the Eagles and, more importantly, Hurts' health, he's on blood thinners and not expected to experience long-term effects.
In the short term, though, Philadelphia needs to find a replacement to save its season. In large part due to injuries to key players such as Hurts, the Eagles now sit 2-5. They entered the season projected to win the NFC East, but currently sit third. However, there's still plenty of time for Philadelphia to right the ship and make the postseason.
Reuniting with former quarterback Gardner Minshew II could help boost those chances.
Why a Gardner Minshew II trade makes sense for Cardinals-Eagles
The Eagles have an active five-game losing streak and continue to struggle with Tanner McKee, who is about to make his third consecutive start in a key divisional game against the Washington Commanders. Should the Eagles lose that one, it's even more of a reason to trade with the Arizona Cardinals for Minshew.
The trade deadline is Nov. 10, so there needs to be a sense of urgency. That's further increased by the fact that the Eagles have yet another divisional matchup against the New York Giants after the Commanders. That matchup comes on Nov. 8, which could be good timing for Philadelphia to turn to Minshew for the remainder of the season as the stopgap.
It wouldn't cost the Eagles that much to rent Minshew for the rest of the season, both financially and in terms of assets surrendered. He's on an expiring contract after signing a one-year, $8.25 million deal with the Cardinals this past offseason. The Eagles could also look into acquiring Jacoby Brissett to save their season, but Minshew is the far cheaper option between the two. There's also the familiarity within the organization, with Minshew having played with the Eagles in 2021 and 2022.
From the Cardinals' standpoint, they can turn Minshew into future assets rather than risk letting him walk for nothing in free agency next offseason. He's expendable because of the fact that they questionably decided to rework Brissett's deal, a decision that hasn't aged well with the Cardinals' predictably slow start to the season.
At some point, later in the season, head coach Mike LaFleur should turn to rookie Carson Beck at quarterback, making Minshew even more expendable. To roster both Minshew and Brissett is redundant, and between the two, Minshew is the easier piece to move.
Considering how much Philadelphia has struggled without Hurts, the Cardinals and Eagles are logical trade partners for a potential Minshew reunion leading up to the Nov. 10 deadline.
