Legendary coach and football personality John Madden once said something along the lines of, "if you have two quarterbacks, you have none."
As we move closer to training camp, one Arizona Cardinals rival may have set themselves up to have that exact issue.
Seattle Seahawks may have an unwanted quarterback battle on their hands
In a division as tight as the NFC West, any negative rumblings from rival camps come as welcomed news. Arizona Cardinals fans should be delighted by recent reports about the Seattle Seahawks.
The Seattle Seahawks have completely overhauled their quarterback position this offseason. First, they traded away long-time starter Geno Smith in exchange for a third-round draft pick. Then, they signed Sam Darnold to a three-year, $100 million contract in free agency. Finally, they selected former Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe in the second round of April's draft.
Heading into training camp, Sam Darnold is the obvious starter in Seattle. Milroe may be part of the Seahawks' future plans at the position, but Darnold's contract suggests that he'll have the reins from day one. Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald recently called media members "crazy" for suggesting otherwise.
But there's already buzz about Sam Darnold struggling with his new team. Seahawks' reporter Brian Nemhauser recently reported that Darnold has "thrown a handful of interceptions" in minicamp and OTAs.
Sam Darnold struggled to maintain a starting job throughout his career before signing with the Minnesota Vikings last offseason. Even with the Vikings, he was only the unquestioned starter because J.J. McCarthy missed the season with an injury. Darnold is the Seahawks' starter for now, but history suggests that he may lose the job in time.
If Darnold struggles early in the 2025 season, expect fans and media members to speculate about a potential switch to rookie Jalen Milroe. Milroe is an immensely talented, athletic young signal caller with the potential to grow into something special. He's unrefined as a passer and struggles with accuracy, but fans might see him as the greener grass to help escape from Sam Darnold's destruction.
Arizona Cardinals fans should love any bit of doubt or speculation creeping up about the Seahawks' quarterback situation at this point in the calendar. As the Cardinals' offense rolls into the 2025 season with more continuity than nearly any other team in the NFL, they don't have to worry about the drama created by uncertainty. Hopefully, when the Cardinals and Seahawks meet in Week 4, Seattle's quarterback issues will help give Arizona an edge.
