What is all the hype about Will Johnson? The Arizona Cardinals rookie cornerback is generating buzz, as the team feels that they selected a draft-day steal in the second round.

With all the talent he possesses, the 47th overall draft pick has the motivation and the skills to be an impactful newcomer on an improving defensive unit.

Lets take a look at how Johnson will perform as a top 50 NFL Draft selection.

How Cardinals rookie will show off talents before training camp

How can Johnson make a contribution on the first day?

Due to issues with his knee, Johnson fell in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft. In his last campaign in Ann Arbor with the Michigan Wolverines, he missed valuable reps due to injuries to his knees and shoulders.

In the six games he participated in, he did have two interception returns for scores that acted in a big way towards the Wolverine's defense against Fresno State and against USC.

At 6 feet 2 inches, 192 pounds, Johnson has the ideal height and weight for an NFL corner and extensively played a role in helping Michigan win the 2024 CFP National Championship in the final year of the four-team playoff format. But this is the NFL, and Johnson must adapt to covering bigger, faster receivers and taking some names as a pro.

What defensive coverages does he fit in?

Besides his model height and weight, Johnson can play in both man and zone coverage. However, his knee injuries prevented him from being picked in the first round of the NFL Draft.

When the Cardinals selected him, Johnson told the reporter he was good to go about his knee but felt some resentment about sliding out on day one. The good news is that he can turn the resentment into motivation to be a successful NFL corner.

Johnson won Defensive MVP of the national championship game in 2023 and confirmed he was in constant communication with the Cards when the NFL combine was over. He also talked to fellow teammate, wide receiver Marvin Harrison, Jr., about teaming up in Arizona when the two were spotted golfing.

How is Johnson making an impression to his teammates?

Not only is Johnson impressing himself so far in his rookie season, but his teammates are also taking note. While on Arizona Sports' 98.7 FM radio, wide receiver Michael Wilson noticed Johnson's significant focus and passion for football from when he wakes up to when he goes to bed.

What role will Johnson play this season as a rookie?

Based on his length and his interception skills, Johnson is a nice fit for this Cardinals defense and their game plan this coming season. With Sean Murphy-Bunting done for the year, the Cards could possibly envision Johnson as their rookie starting corner on opening day.
