Not a great look

The Arizona Cardinals lost a somewhat controversial Week 4 matchup against the New York Giants. They now fall to 1-3 after a disappointing 36-24 road loss that was far closer than the final score may have suggested.

Jacoby Brissett and the Cardinals failed to convert a 1st and goal with less than 30 seconds remaining in the game. Giants cornerback Deonte Banks had a pick-six to seal the contest, putting the final score further out of reach than the actual game itself was.

So not only was the game closer than the final score suggested, but it was also unfortunately one of those games you hate to see, essentially decided by human subjectivities.

Refs caught cussing at Cardinals star TE Trey McBride

The most recent and obvious example is the NFL ref, line judge Jeff Seeman, caught saying expletives to Cardinals star tight end Trey McBride.

This uncalled-for interaction occurred following a Cardinals offensive play on third-and-3 in the fourth quarter. McBride was making his case for pass interference, though referee Seeman clearly took offense to him as a person.

You could even catch McBride at the end smiling because he realized Seeman was caught on camera.

This wasn't even the first potentially game-changing call by the referees this contest. But it was the most uncalleld for in terms of the ref coming at McBride. The NFLPA even deemed the behavior by the ref “unacceptable,” according to Jayna Bardahl and Jonathan Jones of The Athletic.

I love that McBride acknowledges the camera and realizes the ref finally could potentially be treated on the same level as players. But even in the case that these refs get caught, I'm not convinced there's anything in place to truly hold them accountable.

Imagine what would happen if McBride repeatedly told that to the referee and how many games he would potentially be suspended for. The league clearly revolves around revenue, which comes from the fans. Why would fans want to continue paying for a product that values the referees over players, not to mention superstar players? McBride is literally a Madden 99 this season.

Maybe some of this disrespect points to how underrated McBride is compared to the rest of the superstars around the league. I can't imagine this ref cussing at Patrick Mahomes, or whatever cliché superstar you want to name.

But the point remains: it shouldn't matter who the player is; referees should never talk to players in this manner. Good thing they caught him on camera, as you can tell by McBride's reaction.

But why do these things tend to happen to people underestimating Cardinals players? And more importantly, why can't referees treat all players equally?

Not a great look just four weeks into the season. Not sure where they can go from here professionally other than ignore it. And it's our job to ensure that they're held responsible for this mess.
