Arizona Cardinals third-round rookie Carson Beck received the start in Thursday's Hall of Fame Game against the Carolina Panthers. It was legitimately hard to nitpick a flaw in his performance, exiting the game at halftime tied 17-17.
During that limited stretch, he recorded a 125.4 passer rating, totaling 188 passing yards, one touchdown, and zero interceptions while completing 15-of-19 passes.
The touchdown showed impressive touch, and overall he passed the eye test of a calm, cool, and collected quarterback, especially as a rookie. The connection with Jalen Brooks was also apparent, who finished the half with three receptions for 99 yards, becoming the Cardinals' X-Factor in that stretch.
Overall, it was everything you could've wanted from the Cardinals' rookie. He made a case to even start Week 1 over Jacoby Brissett, a topic we'll have to further dive into given its importance.
Grading Carson Beck's impressive Cardinals debut
The fact that Beck's performance even brings up a conversation that the Cardinals may have found their starting quarterback in the third-round suggests that this could potentially turn into the steal of the draft. If Beck continues this performance, it's hard to make a case against it, considering how well he fared and how desperately Arizona needs to resolve its most important question mark.
The most realistic scenario is the Cardinals still addressing the long-term quarterback need in next year's draft. But the most important thing in preseason is proving that you deserve another shot to belong at this next level.
Beck was viewed as one of the more NFL-ready quarterback prospects as someone who is already 24 years old, but that role was never guaranteed. He's firmly placed himself somewhere in between being considered a threat to start over Brissett in the short term and a long-term option as the team's backup of the future.
It's fair to wonder how Beck is going to fare against real competition playing at regular-season-level speed and a defense better than Carolina's. While that's valid, Arizona shouldn't care about any of it.
They took a third-round chance on someone because they needed some source of hope at the most important position in football. Beck provided exactly that in his first-half performance on Thursday.
