Michael Wilson put Arizona Cardinals fans' minds at ease when it was announced on Thursday that he and the organization agreed on a new extension. The contract is a three-year deal that will pay Wilson $75 million. It's a huge win for both Wilson and the Cardinals, as it pays Wilson the money he rightfully deserves and keeps a great player in the desert.
It's great to see the Cardinals retaining their stars, especially with the upcoming season not expected to be a great one for the franchise. They don't have a reliable quarterback in place, but Wilson still decided to stay with the organization that drafted him despite not knowing who would be throwing him the ball down the line.
The interesting thing here is that no one would have blamed Wilson had he not wanted to remain a Cardinal. For one, I mentioned the team's lack of success and how they're not expected to be much better this year. That alone could have been enough reason for Wilson to bolt.

The other reason that could have easily pushed Wilson out the door into another team's arms is that his wife, Sophia Wilson (née Smith), plays in the NWSL (National Women's Soccer League) for the Portland Thorns. She's a star player for Portland and won a gold medal with Team USA at the 2024 Olympics.
Sophia is originally from Windsor, Colorado, which is near Denver. The NWSL recently awarded Denver an expansion team, the Summit, and they're in their first year in the league. With Sophia and Michael's contracts with their respective teams both ending in 2026, a move to Denver seemed like it could make sense for the two of them.
The couple welcomed their first child last year, and it'd certainly be easier for them to live in the same city and raise their child together. No one would have blamed Michael for following his wife to Colorado, where she could play for the Denver Summit and emerge as one of their star players. Meanwhile, he could have joined the Broncos, a team that not only needs help at wide receiver but is also vying for a Super Bowl title. It all felt like a decision that made perfect sense for both parties.
Fortunately, Michael opted to stay with the team that drafted him, proving that he's happy here and believes in what the Cardinals can achieve in the future. Maybe Sophia still moves back to her hometown and plays for the Summit, but even if she does, Cardinals fans can rest easy knowing that the contract is signed and Michael Wilson is here to stay for a few more years.
