While the Arizona Cardinals look all set heading into 2024, it is never too early to start thinking about how Monti Ossenfort can attack the offseason next year. While Jonathan Gannon and the coaching staff focus on the roster they have now, the front office will be monitoring various expiring contracts not just in Arizona, but across the league as well. There are continuous rumors about pending free agents on whether or not they will be traded, re-signed, or just play out the final year of their contracts with their respective team.
The running back position has become very devalued in the NFL where players outside of Christian McCaffrey are not getting paid top dollar. It is the trend that has been seen in recent memory but the run game is still a key factor for an offense to have success.
The Cardinals were one of the best rushing teams last season, but that is expected to change a bit as Arizona has a more promising passing attack. Nonetheless, the Cardinals are still going to have to run the ball to take pressure off of Kyler Murray. As it stands, the Cardinals top two backs heading into this season are James Conner and Trey Benson.
Conner is heading into the final year of his contract with the Cardinals and Benson could be the new starting running back heading into next year. However, the front office should still look to find a complimentary back in the 2025 offseason for Benson if the plan goes accordingly.
