New Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Drew Petzing is no stranger to tumultuous quarterback situations.

It's no secret that the Arizona Cardinals are taking a huge gamble with their new coaching staff. Jonathan Gannon and Company are young and they aren't the most experienced bunch. So one of two things will happen. Either they will thrive, or this experiment will end in disaster.

But if there is one area new offensive coordinator Drew Petzing excels in, it's adapting to the needs of different quarterbacks. When he coached the position with the Cleveland Browns this past season, Petzing had to work with the mediocre journeyman, Jacoby Brissett.

And under his leadership, Brissett tossed 12 touchdown passes, threw just 6 picks, completed 64% of his passes, and had over 2,600 passing yards. No, they weren't sensational numbers in his 11 starts, but over a 17-game stretch, those numbers average to 4,018 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions. Not bad for a high-end backup.

Petzing the right guy for Arizona Cardinals unstable QB situation

Now that we know neither Kyler Murray nor primary backup Colt McCoy will see much if any time in offseason workouts, Petzing may need to work his magic with someone else. But given McCoy's age and limitations, it may be inevitable for the new OC to work with an incoming signal caller to put the Redbirds in the best possible chance to win when September rolls around.

Perhaps we will see Brissett follow Petzing and don a cardinal and white uniform in 2023. Regardless of who the Cardinals sign as the third quarterback, one thing is for certain: Petzing will know how to get the best out of them.

In a worst-case scenario, Murray isn't ready for Week 1, so the Cards would have to turn to a backup. Sure, they could roll with McCoy, but if they decide there are better options out there than the 36-year-old, there's no need to panic if you're a Cardinals fan. They are in good hands under Petzing.
