Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Vita Vea has requested a trade, NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported Monday. Discussions on a potential contract extension have stalled, opening the door for a team with cap space to swoop in and bolster their D-Line.
The Arizona Cardinals are hoping for a breakout season from Walter Nolen III, their No. 16 overall pick in 2025 whose rookie season was derailed due to injury. They did bring Roy Lopez back after a one-year stint in Detroit as well.
Still, it remains to be seen whether Nolen can reach his high ceiling, while ideally Lopez would be more of a rotational piece. Should they want to bring in a more established piece like Vea, Arizona even has the financial flexibility to do so, with $34.8 million in cap space.
The Cardinals should keep sailing on with their rebuild
Arye Pulli of USA TODAY initially mentioned the Cardinals along with the New England Patriots ($37.6 million) and Seattle Seahawks ($25.7 million) as teams with cap space that could potentially make a run at Vea, later adding the San Francisco 49ers as a team that makes sense, given their available space and history of acquiring these star names.
While adding Vea would immediately boost Arizona's defense, which desperately needs all the help it can get, it's also important to consider what the goal should be for the upcoming 2026 season.
The Cardinals are clearly the odd team out of the ones Pulli names as potential landing spots for Vea, seeing as they are coming off a three-win season while the others were fighting to hoist the Lombardi Trophy.
As good as Vea is, he's also 31 years old and doesn't align with Arizona's rebuilding timeline. In fact, he's skilled enough to even win them another game or two this season, which could be the very thing that causes the Cardinals to miss out on a potential franchise-altering quarterback like Arch Manning in the 2027 NFL Draft.
While Vea may fit from both a positional need and financial standpoint for the Cardinals, it's important they continue to play the long game. Acquiring him would cloud that future outlook, especially after factoring in any assets the Cardinals would have to surrender to land him in the first place.
They're better off waiting until they are further along in the rebuild to land a player of Vea's caliber, even if it means having to embrace another long season.
