Player profile of QB Phillip Sims as Arizona Cardinals prepare to wind down preseason
As we have reached the end of Arizona Cardinals training camp and just two games of the preseason remaining, we continue our annual look at the roster player by player. I look at what they’ve done, where they are now and how I project each player’s status at the end of camp.
We go from A to Z and continue with QB Phillip Sims. Sims is an undrafted rookie out of Winston-Salem State.
2014 season: He threw for 1,560 yards with 15 touchdowns and just four interceptions for Winston-Salem in 11 games last season. He moved around a bit. He was in Alabama for two years (redshirted one), one with Virginia, and then the final year at Winston-Salem. He played at all three stops.
2015 season projection: He’s in a big competition that continues this evening in Oakland. We’ll see if he gets into the game tonight. Neither he nor Logan Thomas has taken the lead in the fight for the third QB spot. The bigger question is, will there even be a third QB spot on the final 53-man roster? Still more of this story to be told over the next five days before final cuts are made.
From listening to fans on social media during training camp, the vote is pretty split on Thomas and Sims, although I have seen a lot more support for Sims over the past week or so. This is the one position I think most are looking at the closest given how the QB position played out for the Cardinals in 2014.
