Jim Bakken spent a long time as a tremendous kicker for the Cardianls

Kickers don’t get enough credit. Sure, they aren’t out there every play, taking hits, battering their bodies. However, they are out there in the most stressful of situations, with games on the line, and thousands of people watching them. They’re either heroes, or the reason the team lost, and ignored the rest of the time.

From 1962 to 1978, a remarkable 17 years, Jim Bakken toiled in St Louis for the Cardinals. Though the teams he played on weren’t great, he did his job week in and week out.

During his illustrious career, Bakken made the Pro Bowl four times. He also led the league in points scored in 1967, and was in the top 10 nine other times.

Bakken was recognized for his talents, earning spots on both the 1960s and 1970s All-Decade teams. It’s time the Cardinals let him have a moment in the sun, and add him to the Ring of Honor.
