The Arizona Cardinals went receiver in their second round and kept it local

With cornerbacks and offensive linemen going quick in front of them, the Arizona Cardinals selected receiver Christian Kirk out of Texas A&M.  He is from Scottsdale, Arizona.

The local product played high school football at Scottsdale Saguaro.  The Cardinals should know a lot about him.

Kirk, who was first-team ALL-SEC in both 2016 and 2017, caught 58 passes for 730-yards and seven touchdowns in 2017.  He also returned a kick and a punt for a touchdown.

Being a returner is a big part of his game.  He returned 21 kicks in 2017 for 480-yards. He returned eight punts for 175-yards last season.

Kirk stands at just 5’10 but that hasn’t been an issue for general manager Steve Keim and the Cardinals.  They drafted John Brown four years ago.  He also stands at 5’10.

After losing Brown in free agency this year, along with Jaron Brown, receiver became a huge need.  They will also likely lose Larry Fitzgerald to retirement in a year or two.

A lot of people on social media seemed to be happy with the selection or the thought of it beforehand.  Of course many wanted the Cardinals to get cornerback Josh Jackson out of Iowa.

The Green Bay Packers took Jackson however just three picks in front of them at number 44.  At the point, it seemed like a lock the Cardinals would go receiver.

The choice to take Kirk seemed like a no-brainer at that point.  Not only getting one of the top receivers in the draft, they get a guy a lot of local people know well.

Can you imagine Josh Rosen throwing touchdowns to Christian Kirk in the near future?  It is a thought that should leave a number of fans smiling.

The Cardinals still have another selection this evening in the third round.  Do not be shocked to see a cornerback, tight end or offensive lineman go at that point.
