Arizona Cardinals rookie receiver has his first NFL contract signed sealed and delivered

These days it is much easier to get draft picks to get their rookie deals signed thanks to a new contract system in place.  Back in the day, the Arizona Cardinals had all kinds of difficulty signing their rookie draft picks.

Receiver Christian Kirk signed his deal on Thursday.  He was selected in the second round of the NFL Draft back at the end of April.

With players slotted now for the money they will make with their rookie contracts, it is easier to get guys signed.  Kirk’s signing brings five draft picks under contract now.

His deal is for four years.  If he does well as many hope he does, his first veteran deal should be a big one.

Let’s just hope he makes it there.  As you will remember, reports surfaced last week that Kirk was arrested at the TPC in Scottsdale near the Bird’s Nest at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

He and a friend allegedly threw rocks at cars in the reported incident.  Officers noted in their report that they could smell alcohol on his breath.

The news broke after Kirk was selected, so immediately questions were raised about whether the Cardinals knew about the arrest.  Apparently they did and were satisfied with the story and selected Kirk anyway.

Thursday was another step in the right direction.  The Cardinals are now on the hook.  Let’s just hope there was nothing more to that story.

Kirk is expected to challenge for one of the top receiving spots on the team.  Behind Larry Fitzgerald it is a wide open race for the number two and number three receivers.

Next: Defensive depth an issue for the Arizona Cardinals

Guys like Chad Williams, Brice Butler, and J.J. Nelson might have something to say about that.  The hope is all of them step up and quash fears of another down year for Cardinals receivers.
