He Had No Way To Score Points

Entire articles have been written about how bad the offensive play calling was and how underutilized Larry Fitzgerald was. With that being said, Rosen had no weapons to utilize to showcase his talent.  The play calling hampered Fitz and Johnson, there was basically no receiving corps, special teams were atrocious, kicking was unreliable, and the Cards had zero pass protection.  No one can succeed with those weapons in your arsenal.

The Cards were last in the league in most offensive categories including total yards, first downs, rushing, receiving, and passing.  They did lead the league in one category, and not the one you want; punting.  So it is really hard to evaluate a quarterback when he rarely has the ball.  Remember, he can’t throw the ball to himself and he can’t run the ball himself without blocking.

2019 Can Be Much Different

The Arizona Cardinals have the opportunity to excel in 2019 under Josh Rosen.  The Cards have already made significant improvements to the offensive line, which will keep Rosen on his feet.  Fitzgerald is coming back and should be utilized extensively and intelligently by offense-minded head coach Kliff Kingsbury.

Arizona has signed numerous receivers and should have Christian Kirk and Chad Williams both back available and healthy.  Kingsbury will also likely unleash David Johnson without hesitation and Steve Keim has substantially beefed up the defensive as well.  All the pieces are there.

Josh Rosen will succeed in 2019, of that, I have no doubt.  The only question that remains is if he will succeed as an Arizona Cardinal or as a quarterback wearing a different jersey.  If Rosen was good enough for the Cardinals last year as the 10th overall pick, he should be good enough for this 2019 rebuild team.

He’s got a low contract price, a confident attitude, and most importantly a year of experience.  The Cards would be very wise to cash in on Murray mania, by letting another team pay that price and roll those dice.  You know what they say, a bird in the hand…
