Kyler Murray versus complicated blitz packages

The Dolphins kept Jared Goff on his heels all game long with perfectly executed blitz packages. And they threw everything at Goff, disguising their blitz packages with defensive linemen dropping back into coverage while they sent linebackers, delayed blitzes, and all-out blitzes. The team put on a defensive clinic throughout the second and third quarter in which they allowed just three points.

While Goff surpassed the 350-yard mark, he also tossed two interceptions while completing just 57 percent of his passes for a meager 65.9 quarterback rating. He also lost two fumbles, combining for a grand total of four turnovers overall. He hit the Blaine Gabbert zone in yards per attempt at 5.8, a season-low.

That said, Kyler Murray and company need to be prepared for anything coming from this defense. While Murray is far more mobile than his NFC West rival, he also has a penchant for forcing the ball into coverage when under pressure. His spotty decision-making has led to many of his seven interceptions on the season as well as a few dropped interceptions.

Expect Miami to blitz Murray early and often using identical packages while they look to force him into throwing before he’s ready and likely into bad decisions with the football. Murray is a proven scrambler and has the ability to make something out of nothing as he’s done many times in 2020.

But if the Dolphins cover his favorite running lanes, it will spell trouble for Murray and the offense to get anything going. Murray and the offense must have an early answer to negate the Dolphins blitz packages if they want a repeat offensive performance over the past few weeks.
