Twelve football seasons have come and gone since the Arizona Cardinals made their one and only Super Bowl appearance. Fans of the team would love nothing more than to see the squad playing for all the marbles once again. There’s a certain scenario being bandied about that would make that goal a much more attainable one for the long-suffering Cardinals franchise.

There’s talk around the NFL that three-time Pro Bowler Deshaun Watson has played his last down for the Houston Texans. The highly-coveted quarterback has soured on the organization, and has made it known that he wants to take his talents elsewhere. Does a possibility exist that Watson could end up in the Arizona desert?

It’s obviously a far-fetched idea, but stranger things have happened in the world of professional sports. The Cards possess a bargaining chip that could help them acquire the 25-year old Watson. A gifted player in his own right who could certainly get the attention of the Texans front office.

Kyler Murray has spent the past two campaigns as the Cardinals signal-caller, and is coming off of a Pro Bowl performance in 2020. The 23-year old has an exceptionally-strong arm, and scintillating running ability as well. A player-for-player trade that would send Watson to Arizona for Murray is something that the Texans would almost have to consider.

The deal that would put Watson in a Cards uniform would mean a reunion between the passer and wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins. The pair spent three outstanding campaigns together in Texas. The fact that the club’s management took Hopkins away from Houston’s offensive attack was a huge strike in the eyes of Watson.

Watson’s career numbers are off the charts. In 54 pro appearances (53 starts), the 6’2, 220 pounder has completed 67.8% of his throws for 14,539 yards and 104 touchdown passes. Watson has also racked up 1,677 yards and 17 scores on the ground, proving that he can do damage to opposing defenses with his legs as well.

The acquisition of Watson would make the Cardinals instant contenders for the Vince Lombardi Trophy. While Murray has potential, Watson is a proven commodity with playoff experience. The odds of Arizona landing the quarterback are probably slim, but it sure is fun to think about.
