Big big day in Arizona Cardinals land on Monday morning, the first day of March 2021. In what some consider a stunning announcement, former Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt tweeted out on Monday morning that he was joining the Cardinals.
It took little time for the NFL insiders such as ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport to announce the move as well. Then the team made it official on Twitter.
Watt’s name had not been mentioned in the same breath as the Cardinals as a new home for the 3-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year. His name had been mentioned in the same breath as teams such as the Green Bay Packers and Cleveland Browns.
Even local insiders didn’t believe there was a chance Watt would consider coming to Arizona, particularly because of the money. However the Cardinals were able to make it work on a two-year contract.
The move is the second huge March move the team has made in as many years. Last March, the Cardinals traded for receiver DeAndre Hopkins.
One has to believe Hopkins had a little something to do with this move as well. Whatever the case, fans have to be beyond excited for this move. As long as Watt stay’s healthy, he can dominate.
Now you can put Watt on one end and Chandler Jones on the other. Jones missed most of the 2020 season with an injury. He should be good to go for 2021.
Now they just have to put what we see on paper into action on the field. It’s easier said than done but this move certainly puts the Cardinals defensive line as one of the best in the NFC if not the NFL.
It’s a great day to be a Cardinals fan. Can’t wait to see what’s next but now it seems the month of March brings treasures.
