I was totally wrong about J.J. Watt.
And I will own the fact that I originally didn’t want him to join the team. However, the shock value, the huge upside, and the fact that the Arizona Cardinals have come out of nowhere to get a HUGE name in the offseason for the second year in a row is absolutely exhilarating.
This is what a win-now mentality looks like. This is how you keep pace in the best division in the entire league. Steve Keim has some incredible magic when it comes to getting big name players from Houston. I never thought I would get to experience that same kind of hype and euphoria as when the team acquired DeAndre Hopkins. I was in the quiet car of an Amtrak train from Chicago to Milwaukee when I heard the news. But it did happen again.
Now of course, the health and contract concerns are still there, but there is nothing negative that you can really say about this signing. J.J Watt came to the Arizona Cardinals over teams like Green Bay, Pittsburgh and Cleveland.

The ironic thing is that were was a report that the Buffalo Bills were also another top favorite to land J.J. Watt and the Cardinals took him away at the last second again- much like the “Hail Murray”.
This also adds more fear into the world of Russell Wilson who’s been throwing behind an offensive line that’s basically been as soft as marshmallows to this point. So with the NFC West getting super pass-rush heavy, this is even better news to get the thorn out of their side out of their side. Free agency is going to be wild, and March 15th can’t get here fast enough.
This also does wonders for free agents considering Arizona, as the team is slowly starting to get these big names. The more you have on a team, the better your chances are at winning a title. You can’t always buy that, but Watt brings it. Watt’s intensity in practice and preparation is only going to help this team prosper. Finally, to see the guy who grew up 15 minutes from my house finally be signed to my favorite team is the cherry on top of the sundae of it all.
Let’s hope Steve Keim continues to be on “boss” mode during free agency and beyond.
