Arizona Cardinals hope their success versus Baker Mayfield continues
By Jim Koch
The Arizona Cardinals have faced quarterback Baker Mayfield twice during his career, and have emerged victorious in both matchups
The Arizona Cardinals will attempt to win their second game of the season this coming Sunday when they fly east to meet the Carolina Panthers. Incidentally, defensive coordinator Vance Joseph’s group will be facing a quarterback who they’ve had success against in the past.
Arizona is preparing to take on Baker Mayfield, the signal-caller who was traded to the Panthers back in July. That deal turned out to be good news for the Cards, who have compiled a 2-0 record against the former Cleveland Browns starter.
In all fairness, both of the victories that the Cardinals recorded against Mayfield came when the 27-year old passer was with Cleveland. Will things go any different now that Mayfield is playing for another organization?
Arizona Cardinals have done well against Baker Mayfield in the past
Back in 2019, the Redbirds defeated Mayfield and the Browns by a score of 38-24 at State Farm Stadium. Former Arizona running back Kenyan Drake was the star of the day, tallying 137 yards and four rushing touchdowns.
Last year, the Cards went on the road and inflicted a 37-14 beatdown of Mayfield and the Browns in front of the “Dawg Pound”. Quarterback Kyler Murray completed 20 out of his 30 pass attempts for 229 yards and four touchdowns. Mayfield had a rough afternoon, at one point fumbling the football away after being crushed by defensive end J.J. Watt on a third-quarter sack.
Murray and Mayfield are actually well-acquainted with one another from their days together at the University of Oklahoma. Murray was the backup to Mayfield during the 2017 campaign, but has obviously gotten the better of his former teammate in head-to-head matchups at the NFL level.
Carolina has posted a 1-2 record thus far in 2022 with Mayfield leading the offense. In his three starts, the 6 foot 1, 215 pounder has completed just 51.9 % of his throws for 550 yards and three scoring tosses. Mayfield’s one interception this season came during an opening-day loss to the Browns, the franchise who used a first-round draft pick on the passer back in 2018.
There’s a bit of pressure on the 1-2 Cardinals to triumph when they travel to Carolina this weekend. A continuation of the club’s winning ways against Mayfield would certainly get that accomplished.
