Arizona Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill is not the most popular guy in town. But he’s handled his team’s regime change with a different approach.
Michael Bidwill could have easily appointed Adrian Wilson or Quentin Harris as the general manager and Vance Joseph as the head coach. Sure, the fans would have revolted, but would it have surprised anyone?
This is basically what the Bidwill family does, regardless of who is running or ran the team. They promote from within, and it’s never led to outstanding results.
In 2023, Michael Bidwill must have made and stuck to a New Year’s Resolution, because although he interviewed Wilson, Harris, and Joseph, he went with an outsider in Monti Ossenfort at general manager. And it also looks as though he will hire either Brian Flores or Sean Payton to be the team’s head coach.
Arizona Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill deserves a lot of credit here
Even if the Cardinals don’t land Payton, let’s give credit to Bidwill because he at least had it in him to realize, “Hey, my method of in-house promotion hasn’t worked lately.” That said, he went outside the organization, snagged Ossenfort, and now, the Cardinals seem to be serious contenders to hire Payton.
In the span of just a few months, Bidwill, especially if he gets Payton, just took the Cardinals from a team with little to no hope to one that will have a lot of it. Suppose Bidwill hires Payton and the Cardinals somehow keep the third overall pick in this year’s draft.
Overall, Bidwill hasn’t made great decisions with his franchise. But lately, the much-maligned owner has shown us that he cares about bringing a winner to the desert. He hit big with Ossenfort, and he will be at a legendary level if he can also snag Payton.
