Arizona Cardinals: Losing out on Sean Payton not the end of the world
By Sion Fawkes
It’s official. The Arizona Cardinals have lost out on the Sean Payton sweepstakes. But that shouldn’t mean all hope is lost.
As Sean Payton plans to become the next head coach for the Denver Broncos, the Arizona Cardinals are bringing in another batch of candidates for interviews. I honestly expected no different. In fact, I spoke similar lines earlier this month.
I know this is horrific news to many in the Cardinals faithful. Sean Payton’s record with the New Orleans Saints spoke volumes, and the Cardinals loss is most certainly a win for the Denver Broncos. It’s said to see Payton choose Denver over Arizona, but no, not all hope is lost.
Losing Payton shouldn’t spell ‘all hope is lost’ for Arizona Cardinals
Sure, Payton is a proven commodity who previously won the Vince Lombardi Trophy, so that accounts for a lot. But what about guys like Lou Anarumo, who built the Cincinnati Bengals defense into a force? Brian Callahan is surely a better equipped offensive guru than Kliff Kingsbury could ever claim to be.
I know many of us don’t like Aaron Glenn, but his defensive unit had a stellar second half of 2022 and he is an expert at player development. Ejiro Evero had to deal with one of the league’s worst offenses, yet his defense never backed down and that could go a long way in the desert with the young talent he would have to work with.
And if the Arizona Cardinals want to roll with experience, there’s still Brian Flores. Flores and Ossenfort may already have some chemistry, so again, that accounts for something. What I’m getting at is, even with Payton not coming to the desert, there is no reason to admit defeat on a season that hasn’t even started yet.
