The Arizona Cardinals continue to wait on running back Trey Benson and when he will officially be assigned to the active roster. On Tuesday, the team made a move at the position, but it wasn’t the activation of Benson. Instead, the team brought in a running back who isn’t well-known at all.
General manager Monti Ossenfort signed 23-year-old Corey Kiner off the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad, adding depth at the position. Signed in April by the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent, Kiner was waived by them two months later after signing. His next opportunity was with the Minnesota Vikings, where he has been since September, before coming to Arizona.
What should we expect from Corey Kiner?
Kiner has yet to see any playing time during the regular season, but he did play in a pair of games during the preseason. The first came against the Denver Broncos, where he saw 10 carries for 45 yards. The second came against the Las Vegas Raiders, where his workload was slimmed down to two carries for 23 yards.
In a corresponding move to adding Kiner, the Cardinals released running back Jermar Jefferson to free up a spot on the roster.
Currently listed as the No. 4 running back on the depth chart, Kiner sits behind Bam Knight (No. 1), Emari Demercado (No. 2), and Michael Carter (No. 3). It is unlikely we see any action from Kiner, and the move is just to provide depth at the position while Trey Benson continues to work his way back from injury.
Benson has been inactive since Week 4 after sustaining an injury to his left knee in the team’s 23–20 loss at home to the Seattle Seahawks.
While unlikely, we see Kiner even play a down; it is worth reporting a roster shakeup that points to when Trey Benson may be returning. The Cardinals face off against the Los Angeles Rams (9–3) at home at 4:25 p.m. EST.
