GLENDALE, Ariz. — The Arizona Cardinals were routed by the San Francisco 49ers over the weekend; there was not much to be happy about — especially after they were penalized a franchise-record 17 times.
However, a pair of Cardinals reached personal milestones, while one also secured himself an NFL record.
The big record breaker came from quarterback Jacoby Brissett, who completed an NFL-record 47 passes while also throwing for a career-high 452 passing yards. The 32-year-old journeyman also threw for a pair of touchdowns, with as many interceptions. He finished the day with a passer rating of 96.8.
The other milestone came at the hands of Michael Wilson, who stepped up big time into the role of wide receiver No. 1 as he hauled in a career-high 15 catches for 185 yards. The third-year player out of Stanford was targeted 18 times and averaged 12.3 yards per catch. This is the type of performance that head coach Jonathan Gannon has been waiting to see from what would normally be the No. 2 wideout in the offense.
Wilson stepped up big time in the absence of Marvin Harrison Jr., who missed yesterday’s game after undergoing an appendectomy earlier in the week.
While the Cardinals didn’t stand much of a chance going into the game, there are a few positive notes to take away. Watching Brissett sling the ball with no fear is what this offense needs, as it gives playmakers an opportunity to showcase their full potential. In a way, Brissett’s fearless play allowed Michael Wilson to step up with his best game as a pro.
The Cardinals have the week to rest up and prepare for their second consecutive home game as they take on the Jacksonville Jaguars at home. As for the 49ers, they get a long week before they host the Carolina Panthers on Monday Night Football.
