The 2025 season is already a lost cause for the Arizona Cardinals; however, that doesn’t mean that general manager Monti Ossenfort is done making surprise roster moves. The team added a second kicker to their roster in Joshua Karty, coaxing him from a division rival in the Los Angeles Rams.

The acquisition of Karty looks to be a move that will challenge Arizona’s current kicker, Chad Ryland, who has struggled as of late in terms of accuracy. While he is hit on 100% of his extra point attempts (32/32),  Ryland has seen his fair share of struggles with field goals, only hitting on 57.1% of his attempts over the team’s past six games.

Karty, 23, lost his starting spot in L.A. due to inconsistent performance, as the team waived him in November. Since then, it has been Harrison Mevis handling the kicking duties for the Rams. Karty was moved to their practice squad but was scooped up by the Cardinals, who added him to their active roster.

In the eight games he saw with Los Angeles, Karty made 66.7% of his field goals and 88.5% of his extra point attempts, which we guess wasn’t enough to save him the team’s starting job.

This is the Cardinals' second notable move in the special teams department, as the team added punter Matt Haack back in November, cutting veteran Pat O’Donnell in a corresponding move. Haack was signed to fill in for the injured Blake Gillikan.

The Cardinals have long been eliminated from playoff contention, since Week 13, to be precise. But aside from their disappointing record, they continue to fight until the very end, despite all the injuries and lackluster performances.

The Cardinals play their second-to-last game of the season on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals (5–10) on the road, and as it stands, the team will be without multiple key players on defense. Walter Nolen III and Budda Baker headline that group, with the potential of Josh Sweat, Will Johnson, Max Melton, and Jalen Thompson to follow that same route.

The big news, though, is the fact that the Cardinals added a second kicker to their active roster, and that Chad Ryland’s job may be in jeopardy if he isn’t able to make kicks consistently.
