The details of the Jacoby Brissett trade between the Arizona Cardinals and Baltimore Ravens were finalized on Friday. Arizona will be sending Brissett and a 2027 fifth-round pick to Baltimore in exchange for a 2027 fourth-round pick and a 2028 seventh-round pick, per ESPN's Adam Schefter and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
The Cardinals likely should've seen what they had in Marvin Harrison Jr. in terms of his connection with another quarterback besides Brissett before trading him. But at least Cardinals GM Monti Ossenfort has leaned into the rebuild this season.
Here are the Cardinals' updated 2027 draft picks:
1st Round
2nd Round
2nd Round (via Houston)
3rd Round
4th Round
4th Round (via Baltimore)
7th Round
7th Round (via San Francisco)
Arizona is exceeding (low) expectations with a 3-5 record to start the season, with upsets over the Chargers, Rams, and most recently the Cowboys. But to Ossenfort's credit, Arizona at least seems to accept the fact that the gap between them and the rest of the NFC West is still too wide.
However, his weakness as a draft evaluator unfortunately has kept the Cardinals in this endless rebuilding cycle. Some might call it purgatory.
Monti Ossenfort's draft misses keep Cardinals stuck in purgatory
It's hard to feel encouraged about the Cardinals' future assets given Ossenfort's track record.
Offensive tackle Paris Johnson Jr. was a hit as the No. 6 overall pick in 2023 coming out of Ohio State, but that's about it as far as legitimate building blocks go, especially early in the draft.
Arizona admitted its Harrison draft mistake by trading him for far less value just a few seasons later. BJ Ojulari was a second-round pick in 2023 who's already off the roster as well after being waived in the offseason and joining the Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad.
The jury is still out on Walter Nolen III and Jeremiyah Love, Arizona's recent first-round picks, who haven't yet panned out largely due to injury. Darius Robinson looks improved this season, finally showing signs of returning value.
Still, whether it's been due to inconsistency, injuries, the Cardinals failing to put them in the ideal position to succeed, etc., there's been more draft misses than hits in the Ossenfort era.
It's great the Cardinals are prioritizing their long-term outlook with these trades before the deadline. Hopefully they continue to trend in that direction leading up to Nov. 10, exploring the market for veterans like Josh Sweat.
But what's the use in stockpiling this draft capital if nothing suggests it will translate into anything meaningful?
We've already seen Ossenfort move on former first- and second-round picks like Harrison and Ojulari just a few years later. Who's to say whoever they're bringing in isn't next on that list?
Again, time will tell with more recent picks like Love, but based on what we have seen from prior picks, it hasn't been encouraging. Thanks for getting us these picks back, Ossenfort, but it seems like someone else should be in charge of what is essentially a rebuilding do-over in Arizona.
