Monday Night Football.  The Arizona Cardinals are ready to host the San Diego Chargers at University of Phoenix Stadium in the second game of a doubleheader on ESPN.  These teams last met in the regular season back on October 3, 2010 in San Diego and the Chargers put a whooping on the Cardinals 41-10.  These two teams also played each other in the preseason finale a week and a half ago with the Chargers coming away with a 12-9 victory.

The biggest questions as of Sunday are on the Cardinals side of the ball.  They announced on Saturday that running back Andre Ellington and safety Tyrann Mathieu would be gametime decisions.  Ellington had an MRI on Friday that came back negative with nothing structurally wrong with his foot.  Mathieu is coming off a torn ACL last December.  I would not count on either actually getting into the game on Monday night but Ellington did practice on Saturday.

As for the Chargers, their top tight end Antonio Gates is labeled currently as 50/50 for a go on Monday night.  I hope he plays because the Cards do need to figure out how to cover tight ends and there are not many better out there than Gates.  The Cards, as we all know, have difficulty covering tight ends.  That trend carried over from last season to the preseason.

In the end I think both teams have weapons on offense.  I think it’ll come down to which defense can make the most stops.  Ellington or no Ellington, the Cards have enough weapons to overcome his absence.  It’ll be close most of the way.  I will go Cardinals 27 Chargers 23.
